And it turns out, as luck would have it, our not letting go of the watch would be the best decision we’d ever made. Because just as that big ugly creature was gaining on us, the watch began to spark and fizz again. Dazzling blue light started dancing round our fingertips, brighter and brighter, tingling cold. Then, just like before, a blinding flash exploded out from the device. Light engulfed us all over again and, for an instant, the universe vanished … Only this time, it cleared even quicker, as though we’d sprinted right through the light and out the other side.

Now everything had changed again: we weren’t in the forest any more – there was no forest. There was only charred concrete and metal scattered everywhere. The sky was blood red. There was a burnt, almost chemical, taste in the hot, dry wind. I spun round to look behind me. Old Dome-Head had disappeared.

‘What the hell’s going on?’ I gasped.

‘I dunno,’ said Umer, ‘but, whatever it is, it’s just happened again.’

We didn’t have time to wonder for long though. Turns out we still weren’t alone. Thirty metres away, a bunch of soldiers were running towards us, shouting and firing laser weapons. I spun round to see what they could be shooting at. Coming from the other direction were a squad of scary-looking robot dudes, firing guns of their own. And Umer and I were caught right in the middle!
